A night orienteering walk in the Blackdown hills, solving clues and finding your way between checkpoints. They report your progress to central control so any overdue teams can be promptly traced by an experienced Search & Rescue team. It’s not a race – the objective is to get round inside the bogey time and solve the clues.
Teams enter because they really enjoy the challenge of navigating the route and solving clues in the dark, while raising substantial sponsorship for important local charities. Some teams have been doing it for ages and look forward to a new route challenge every year but it’s quite possible for new or inexperienced teams to start early and complete most of the shorter course before it gets too dark.
This year we’re focussing on Somerset Sight, http://www.somersetsight.org.uk/ a Taunton-based Somerset charity who provide practical help and counselling to people with sight impairment and their families and the Taunton Opportunity Group, https://www.tauntonopportunitygroup.org.uk/ Taunton’s pre-school for children with special needs. A registered charity, TOG strives to provide a warm welcoming, safe and stimulating environment for children and their families. Our children have a range of special needs including Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down Syndrome and complex medical needs. Funds from Moonraker will also support the Club’s other work in the community.
Where, When and How Long?
In 2015 we found Taunton Racecourse to be a popular start point, so this year we’re running an entirely new route from there, on the evening of Saturday October 13th and into the early hours of Sunday. More experienced walkers will enjoy the challenge of the 15 mile course; the 7 mile course will appeal to all and is suitable for less experienced walkers who’ve not done a night orienteering exercise before. An early start time should enable you to complete most of the course in daylight.
Ample secure parking at the Racecourse. First start 5pm, last 8pm. Refreshments at half-way (cost included in the registration fee) provided by Inner Wheel. Minimum team of four, maximum eight. Under 18’s need parental permission, children under 12 by special arrangement – please ring to discuss. You need suitable footwear and visibility – highlight the kit checklist tab at the top. Full first aid cover and experienced Search & Rescue teams to keep an eye on your progress.
